Basically, there is no technical difference in the core dual-clutch concept—both were pioneered within the Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen refers to its dual-clutch transmission as DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox), whereas Audi markets its version as S-Tronic.
Both use two separate clutches (one for odd gears and one for even gears) controlled by an intelligent electro-hydraulic Mechatronic unit to pre-select the next gear, delivering lightning-fast shifts without interrupting power delivery.
However, Audi's longitudinal Quattro models (such as the A4, A5, A6, A7, and Q5) frequently utilize the DL501 (0B5) 7-speed S-Tronic architecture designed for longitudinal layouts, whereas transverse VW and Audi models (such as the Golf GTI/R and Audi A3/S3) share transverse units like the DQ200, DQ250, DQ381, and DQ500.
